You

I work with teens and adults (13+). I work with individuals of all races, ethnicities, spiritual identities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and am LGBTQ+ affirming.

I intentionally keep my private practice small because I want to be able to provide the best care for my clients. This means I am often unable to take clients that do not fit within my scope of expertise. I will not be a good fit for you if:

  • You have actively engaged in self-harm or suicide attempts in the past year

  • You are struggling with substance abuse or addiction

  • You are engaged in ongoing court or legal system involvement (including divorce and custody issues)

Us

I work with individuals in person in Richmond, VA. If you are outside of the city, I am happy to meet with you virtually via a HIPPA compliant platform.

In therapy with me, clients value the autonomy they have in determining their goals and monitoring their progress. You are the expert of your experience and it is my goal to foster a collaborative and empowering therapeutic environment.

You are already capable of profound healing and my job is to simply to guide you toward that capacity with compassion, insight, creativity and, always a bit of humor.

Common Questions

  • No. Tides Therapy, LLC is an out-of-network provider, I do not work directly with any insurance companies. However, our services may qualify for reimbursement under many PPO insurance plans. We will provide you with a monthly statement of services to enable you to seek reimbursement from your insurance provider. We recommend contacting your insurance company to determine what your out-of-network mental health coverage is.

These questions may be helpful to discuss with your insurance carrier:

    * Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?

    * What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met?

    * Is there a limit my insurance will pay for a 60-minute session (service code 90837)?

*How do I file my claims so that I can get reimbursed for out of network services?

  • I am fully vaccinated and have the ability to see clients face to face in my office, with or without masks, depending upon your comfort level.

I also see clients solely online, if that is their preference and it works for their treatment goals.

  • In EMDR treatment, there are distinct phases, with more unique elements involving reprocessing and the use of bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping.

Throughout our sessions, we collaborate to identify past memories or events influencing your current symptoms, designated as 'targets' for reprocessing. As you recall these targets, we explore what you saw, felt, heard, and thought during those events, including current thoughts and negative beliefs. I guide the bilateral stimulation while you focus on the distressing material, allowing your mind to wander. The eye movements persist until the memory becomes less distressing, and beliefs begin to shift.

During EMDR sessions, intense emotions may arise. It is my responsibility to allocate sufficient time for grounding, ensuring a smoother transition from the session to your daily life.

  • Short answer, it depends! Some clients come to me for a few sessions, and some clients come to me for years. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to receive therapy. You and I can discuss what you’d like to get out of therapy. That will help you decide how often and for how long you would like to come.

What is most common: I usually suggest starting with a new client on a weekly basis then decrease session frequency gradually to bi-weekly, or monthly. This is all dependent on clients needs and goals for therapy.
